CIRCULAR December 1986
The old question about marriage and divorce comes up again and again. It seems that this happens purposely to distract from what people teach and do them selves. I have enough of it and also like to say something very clear about this matter. I am convinced that God hates many things, but number one is divorce. From the beginning divorce was not planned.
Of course we realize that this question was not asked by the disciples but rather by the Pharisees. I don’t know if anything has changed since then. In Matth. 19 the Lord spoke about it. In verse 3 we read, “The Pharisees also came unto Him, testing Him, and saying unto Him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?” The answer the Lord gave to this question can be read in the verses 4-6.
Again they approached Him and asked, “Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?” (verse 7). From the following verse one can see that it was not a commandment but a concession, not the perfect but the permissive will of God. In verse 8, the Lord answered and said, “Moses, be cause of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to put away your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.” Brother Branham has dealt on this subject pro foundly, receiving first by divine inspiration the actual truth about it, and so he could illuminate the whole matter from all angles and bring things up to date, which are binding for us. But what the Lord said about this subject then is still valid today, “All men cannot receive this saying, except they to whom it is given.” (verse 11) On page 43, Brother Branham says in the sermon Marriage and Divorce, “Until it’s revealed, you don’t know it.” So it is.
I would rather have my feet chopped off than to choose the way to the lawyer and to start a divorcement. In I Cor. 6:1-6, the apostle explains that the believers should not take any case before unbelieving judges. We are to judge the world and even the fallen angels. It’s my deepest conviction that God hates divorcement. He joins together, but Satan puts asunder.
