Circular letter JUNE 1971

Obedience is better than sacrifice

« »

If we already read in the Old Testament that rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry (1Samuel 15:23), we should carefully look into the mirror of the Word again and ask ourselves if we have not replaced worship with idolatry and if the curse of witchcraft is not upon us through disobedience.

On April 18, 1971 we were staying in Berlin on the occasion of screening the movie. As we had no meetings on Sunday morning, after many years we visited a Pentecostal church, not with the intention to criticise but to hear the Word of God. But what we saw there made me write these lines. We believe that the Word of God is holy and there must be the fear of God and order in the house of God. Who gives women the right to come to the service in tight long trousers or miniskirts? Who has given them the right to come with their hair so short that it does not even cover their nose? Doesn’t the Bible say in 1Corinthians 11:14-15 that if a man has long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. Who gives young people with their shoulder length hair the right to take their seats in the first or second row. People of this world can do as this world does but we are not of this world (Gospel of John 17:14). God's children make themselves aligned with God and His Word. Is the purpose to have the full house or is it to ensure that people are renewed and born again unto the living hope? Then they can testify: “Old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

Nobody may fill old vessels with new wine and nobody should place new patches on an old garment. Brethren, hasn't there been terrible defection in everything? Hasn’t the spirit of this world and this time expel the Holy Spirit? Hasn’t only a dead form of worship remained without the power of God? What is the purpose of such make-believe? God sees how it really is. Brothers, tell people the truth because only the truth sets free otherwise you will once be blamed and badly reproached. Never again take the Word of God lightly but bring all the solemnness of God's truth to the balances of God because “Mene Tekel” will surely come and if it then proclaimed: “Weighted in the balances and found wanting”, it will be too late for ever. O God, remember your people for whom you have paid the high price.
